Leech Lake Fishing Report 5-28-19

May 28, 2019 by Leech Lake Guide Service

Not a lot has changed in the last week. As we prepare for the upcoming tournament we are trying many different spots and finding Leech Lake Walleyes nearly everywhere. One consistent thing that we have noticed is most of our fish are coming out of a hard bottom – Sand, Gravel, and rock. Common water temp has been in the mid to high 50s.

Most of our leech lake walleye guides have been targeting the 6-9 feet of water. A jig like an Arrow Head Tackle long shank jig and minnow or a prerigged Lindy leech rig have been the hot ticket. When jigging keep in mind your cadence. When you have more than one person in the boat, just like using different colors make sure you use different jigging cadences. Once you find something that works stick with it.

Leech Lake has a good supply of natural shinners in it. As the water gets warmer the shinners should begin to run in the shallows. Our Leech lake walleye guides will start to target the shallow sand as this is where they spawn. More reports to follow!

We have just a few dates available for June. Feel free to call or email for availability. We are reachable by email at [email protected] Or by phone at 507-456-6140

Leech Lake Fishing Report 5-22-19

The bite for our Leech Lake Guides has changed up a bit. Last report we were getting Walleyes on a green Northland Fireball Jig a minnow in shallow water. The bite now has shifted to more of a leech and lindy rig bite. We prefer to use the prerigged Lindy red leech rigs. Most of our fish came in 10-12 Feet of water on the big part of Leech Lake. Targeting reefs with Rocks and Sand have been key to getting these walleyes to bite.

With the heavy winds we have been fighting boat control was more important than ever. Keeping an eye on your speed as you drift with the waves or move with the trolling motor will put more fish in the boat. The targeted speed for our Leech lake Guides to catch walleyes was .5 to .8 mph. Using a drift sock and trolling motor when needed will keep that speed lower and in the targeted range.

Leech Lake Fishing Report 5-12-19

It was another busy Walleye guiding opener. The weather was decent and we did have enough wind to keep the fish active. Most of our Walleye and perch were caught along the west shore line as the wind was blowing in. Star PT, Little Hardwood, and Big Hardwood all held numbers of active fish.

A Green Northland Fireball Jig was the hot lure for us tipped with a fat head or shinner. Our fish came out of 5-9 feet of water so using the wind to stay in the correct depth was fairly easy. Jigging these leech lake walleyes can be a bit of a guessing game some days. We have found that certain times they will want a more rapid jigging movement and other times slower with a longer fall. Having each person try different colors is common sense but having each person using a different jigging movement until you figure out what they are looking for can really improve your catch on Leech Lake.

Putting together a pattern to catch these eyes wasn’t too tough. The perch have spawned or are in the process of it depending on where they are located. Since they are in shallow to spawn the walleyes were in shallow chasing them. Along with the depth was the bottom structure that we targeted. Perch spawn in mostly sand so focus your efforts on that. Of course this is one of the reasons that the Green jigs were so hot.
