The Leech lake walleye fishing has either been lights out great or slow. No in between for us. Our Guides out of Walker MN have been putting in the time the last week and finding fish a variety of ways. Target places that have water that is 18+ feet deep near by or good weed growth. Traders bay has been good as well as Ottertail and Duck points.

Keep in mind that the water temp is warming up so the fish are starting to move a little slower. As the sun gets high in the sky look for them to seek cover and out of shallow water. We have been catching them nearly every way possible but our most productive days have been using two different methods.

Live Bait Rigs

One of our favorite ways to catch Walleyes on Leech Lake is using a Snell or live bait rig. We have covered them in past reports and not much has changed on how to fish these rigs and what to look for in your equipment. Typically, when using crawlers use a longer snell. Look for something close to 7-8 feet long especially on calm days. If you are using a leech or minnow a shorter snell is easier to control. 5 foot is a good length to shoot for on these.

Covering Ground

What I mean here is moving faster with a presentation that allows for just that. Basically you are looking to cover water looking for active fish and trigger a reaction strike from them big Leech Lake Walleyes. Pulling spinners with crawlers in the 1.2 – 1.8 mph range to find active fish has been good when the fish are neutral. If you prefer an artificial method Crank baits have been working also.

We have been picking them up using Rapala shad raps in 11 – 17 Feet of water. As far as color a bleeding shad, perch, or crawdad pattern have been our go tos. This is a little faster method. Generally we target the 1.8- 2.6 mph range.

Our Walker MN Walleye guides are picking up fish. Focusing on break lines that come up to the 10-13 foot range have been key. Crawlers have been the ticket the last few days as we have been having small may fly hatches nearly everyday.

Our guides on Leech lake have been picking up walleyes all over the lake, from the north end of walker bay to duck point and traders bay. The key piece is being close to deeper water. We have been using two different methods of fishing to keep our customers on fish.

Method #1

The First method works better if you have a little wind or at least some cloudy weather. I have found that walleyes tend to prefer a lindy rig more when its not flat calm and sunny. If its flat calm and sunny see the second method below. Typically we will tie our own but in a pinch going to the Lindy Fishing Tackle prerigged Lindy snell can save a bunch of time. Tipping these lindy rigs with a crawler and blowing it up to keep it floating has really made a difference. A red hook on a six foot or longer lindy rig has been working great for us with a black hook coming in a close second.

Try to position your crawler on the hook so it wont spin and will slide through the water with ease. Also make sure to keep your worms cool when it is hot out so they will stay alive longer and look healthy.

Method #2

If you have a calm sunny day covering ground with a spinner and bottom bouncer is preferred. Again, we are using crawlers as bait on these rigs. Try to keep the boat moving at about 1.2-1.6 mph. Aim to keep your bouncer just off the bottom. If your speed is consistent it should occasionally tick the bottom.

As the water temp continues to rise so does the fishing! Our Leech Lake Walleye Guides have been chasing them all over the lake with luck nearly everywhere! These fish are on the chow and it shows as they are aggressive. We have narrowed it down to a few different areas for our hottest bites.

The ROCKS! This is a little harder fishing since you will get hung up but they are eating in the rocks up shallow on days with some cloud cover. Pitching a jig and minnow is our go to for this type of fishing. We have also had luck with B-FISH-N AUTHENTX in white or green. Most of the main lake is warm enough that the walleyes are hitting the rocks. As for walker bay, it still needs a week of warm weather to get them moved into the rocks in good numbers.

The SAND! The other hot spot is along the sand in deeper water. We have been targeting 10-15 feet of water pulling a prerigged Lindy snell tipped with a blown up crawler. Traders bay and duck points have been good. This is done mostly trolling or drift fishing in the .4 to .8 mph range. When you feel that weight from a fish give it some line, count to 10 and set the hook.

Not a lot has changed in the last week. As we prepare for the upcoming tournament we are trying many different spots and finding Leech Lake Walleyes nearly everywhere. One consistent thing that we have noticed is most of our fish are coming out of a hard bottom – Sand, Gravel, and rock. Common water temp has been in the mid to high 50s.

Most of our leech lake walleye guides have been targeting the 6-9 feet of water. A jig like an Arrow Head Tackle long shank jig and minnow or a prerigged Lindy leech rig have been the hot ticket. When jigging keep in mind your cadence. When you have more than one person in the boat, just like using different colors make sure you use different jigging cadences. Once you find something that works stick with it.

Leech Lake has a good supply of natural shinners in it. As the water gets warmer the shinners should begin to run in the shallows. Our Leech lake walleye guides will start to target the shallow sand as this is where they spawn. More reports to follow!

The bite for our Leech Lake Guides has changed up a bit. Last report we were getting Walleyes on a green Northland Fireball Jig a minnow in shallow water. The bite now has shifted to more of a leech and lindy rig bite. We prefer to use the prerigged Lindy red leech rigs. Most of our fish came in 10-12 Feet of water on the big part of Leech Lake. Targeting reefs with Rocks and Sand have been key to getting these walleyes to bite.

With the heavy winds we have been fighting boat control was more important than ever. Keeping an eye on your speed as you drift with the waves or move with the trolling motor will put more fish in the boat. The targeted speed for our Leech lake Guides to catch walleyes was .5 to .8 mph. Using a drift sock and trolling motor when needed will keep that speed lower and in the targeted range.
