Leech Lake Fishing Report 6-25-20

June 25, 2020 by Leech Lake Guide Service

A mayfly hatch can put a damper on fishing but that didn’t stop out Leech Lake Walleye Guides from catching limits! The start of the hatch happened late last week and continued into this week. Boy did the Walleyes on Leech lake change what they wanted to eat.

We started out dragging leeches around with a short snell and that worked good to put fish in the boat. Most of these fish were coming in the 10-13 feet of water. When you get a bite on a snell it is important to let them have line to get a good hook set.

Later in the week they started going after crawlers and a longer snell. Leech lake walleyes love a crawler that has been blown up to help it float of the bottom. The lindy rig we used was about 7 feet long.

We mainly focused on transition lines from mud to rock/weed. As the flies come out of the mud they are an easy target for the walleyes. Another key factor for our Leech Lake walleye guides is boat control and keeping the boat moving the right speed. We try to focus on the .4-.8 mph speed.

One thing to keep in mind while these fish are changing what they prefer to eat is split your boat. Half use a crawler and half use a leech. Soon we will be switching over to the spinner bite.

We do have some openings still, Give us a call and we can set you up. If we don’t answer please leave us a message. https://leechlakeguideservice.com/contact-us/

Leech Lake Fishing Report 6-8-20

June 8, 2020 by Leech Lake Guide Service

With the water warming up on Leech Lake and a small fly hatch this past week our Leech Lake Walleye Guides report “fish are starting to fall into their summer spots.” This also means summer patterns are a go! When it is fairly calm out our go to tactic has been spinners. They allow you to cover a lot of ground in a short time and you trigger a reaction bite for even the laziest walleyes. A few things have been key to us catching these walleyes, the tackle and the location.

Most of the fish our walleye guides have been catching have come on only a few different colors of spinner rigs. White and pink has been #1 with a close second being purple and gold. We prefer to run these spinners behind a 1.5 oz bottom bouncer. One tip that has helped us when the sun is bright and its flat calm out is to down size that bouncer to a 1 oz. This allows you to get it further away from the boat compared to a 1.5 oz. The idea is to keep it close to the bottom but not dragging on it. Try to keep the boat moving at about 1.4-1.7 mph.

1st and 2nd Duck point, Ottertail point, Traders bay, Grassy point and the main lake humps have all been producing fish. Focus on the 8-12 feet of water with mid-day spots being a bit deeper. Most of our fish have been coming from the sand to weed transition. This type of fishing is best done with a longer rod and a soft tip. Setting the hook isn’t necessary and actually causes more missed fish. Allow the rod to bend back with the pressure of the fish for a few seconds and then begin your fight.

We still have openings for June but space is limited. Call now for more info or a Leech lake fishing report. https://leechlakeguideservice.com/contact-us/

Leech Lake Fishing Report 8-12-19

August 12, 2019 by Leech Lake Guide Service

Where the wind blows the fish will show! That has been the name of the game for our Leech Lake Fishing guides this past week. Without the wind the lake has been tougher to catch fish. Our most active fish have been eating in the mud and are coming up with small leeches attached to their mouths. Paying attention to these little things is part of what makes your guide successful. Two different presentations have been putting fish in our Leech Lake charter boats.

Crank Baits: Run these guys over the weeds and along the edges to find the active fish. Shoot for 1.8-2.2 Miles per hour and 80-110 feet back. Perch and crayfish colors have been most productive in 8-12 feet of water. We prefer to run the Berkley Flicker shad or Rapala shad raps but Hot-N-Tots have also put nice walleyes boat side.

Crawler rigs: Running Spinners with crawlers has also been productive but a little more cumbersome with all the little perch in the lake right now. Our Walker MN Fishing guides have been working the same areas and the same depths with the spinners. However, It appears that they are hitting the spinners more so in the low light periods.

The common theme this past week is using green and brown colors with an occasional day that pink is hot. Don’t get discouraged with the small perch as the walleyes are mixed in with them.

We have a few days open for this month but are starting to book into September. We are also taking reservations on our Ice house rentals too. https://leechlakeguideservice.com/contact-us/ To call and book, Don’t wait!

Leech Lake Fishing Report 8-5-19

Working for our walleyes and covering ground has been the name of the game for our Walker Minnesota Leech Lake Walleye Guides. The water temps are in the high 70s and that has made the walleyes slow down.

We have been targeting walleyes in any where from 7-22 Feet of water with the most productive area being about 11-13 feet. Running spinners with bottom bouncers and crawlers has out shined pulling cranks so far. Wind swept shorelines and the goose flats near goose island have been good for us as well as the Walker Bay narrows.

We did have a large storm come through this morning and do some damage. We received 2 inches of cool rain in a short time so hopefully that cools the lake down a bit.

Leech Lake Fishing Report 7-18-19

July 17, 2019 by Leech Lake Guide Service

Well I think our Walker MN fishing Guides are finally out of the May fly hatch. Over the last 3-4 weeks we have been seeing may flies in the water column as well as on the surface. They seem to have stopped hatching finally. But the big question is, what does that mean for walleye fishing on Leech Lake?

With less food in the water for these walleyes to eat the bite has picked up. Young of the year perch are gown up enough to chase for these big walleyes so look for them to feed on a perch pattern. Our guides have been focusing on a few parts of the lake with the same characteristics to find active walleyes.

Look for shallow (under 14 feet) sand and weed transitions. The small perch are in there and the walleyes are in return chasing them. Most of our luck has come on spinner rigs with a perch or gold pattern tipped with a crawler. Depending on the day our targeted speeds have been anywhere from 1.2 – 1.8 mph.

We have a few openings available for the month but are starting to fill up. Feel free to call, text or email us https://leechlakeguideservice.com/contact-us/
